Redox Dual Action

Context-dependent oxidative and anti-inflammatory activity of Boswellia and AKBA

Boswellia's redox behaviour is different from more classical dual-action compounds such as curcumin. Its dominant role is anti-inflammatory, but downstream oxidative stress can still contribute to tumour-cell kill in the right context.

In healthy tissue

  • suppresses NF-κB, COX-2, and 5-LOX

  • reduces inflammatory damage

  • supports normal-tissue resilience during radiotherapy or treatment stress

In tumour cells

  • downstream ROS accumulation may occur after PI3K/Akt inhibition and mitochondrial stress

  • tumour cells dependent on inflammatory survival signalling may be more vulnerable to this shift

Why 5-LOX matters

One of AKBA's distinctive features is direct 5-lipoxygenase inhibition. That gives Boswellia a unique anti-inflammatory angle compared with several other oncology adjuncts.

Practical interpretation

Boswellia is best understood as primarily anti-inflammatory with a secondary, context-dependent oxidative component in tumour cells.
